Case Synopsis Langley Medical Health is one of the largest public healthcare organization s in Nevada. Located in North Reno, LMH provides healthcare for seven unique and diverse communities. Since it’s founding in 1937, LMH has expanded to include, a 327 bed tertiary hospital, and level II trauma center, a 107 bed community hospital, two skilled nursing facilities, a home care division, an ambulatory surgery center, and an outpatient behavioral health center. Anticipating growth in the population, and requirements to meet state mandates, LMH developed a one billion dollar Facilities Master Plan (FMP). The capital necessary to actualize the FMP has partially been secured through state healthcare bonds. The remaining capital needed will be raised through, operational revenue, philanthropic efforts, and strategic growth strategies over the next 10 years. The challenge is to provide safe patient care today with a limited amount of financial resources. LMH implemented a enterprise wide EHR system in 2008, phase I of the project is complete but lucks stability and optimization. The challenges and ongoing issues with phase I of the EHR implementation project have caused a delay in the implementation of phase II. Staff nurses and pharmacist collaborated to develop a costly proposal to replace all IV pumps with smart IV pumps. The proposal has received mixed reviews among clinical staff, the Chief Informatics Officer (CIO), and the director of pharmacy.
